To say that ChatGPT is trending is quite an understatement. Despite its kinda strange name, it is in everybody’s moth and talk of town not only among the technological interested ones. And it has to be admitted, rightfully so.
So what is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is a large language model developed by OpenAI. It is a computer program that uses artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning techniques to generate human-like text in response to prompts. It is trained on a dataset of conversational text and can be used for a variety of natural language processing tasks such as language translation, question answering, and text completion.
At least that is how it describes itself, and it is pretty impressive how good it is at these tasks. To generate full essays on a certain topic, with any style wished (promotional? Humorous? Scientific?) within seconds – a dream come true for many students (and kind of an unsolved nightmare) for there teachers. A poem based on certain keywords or snippets of software code for a defined functionality – all this and some more makes it easy to understand why people are truly impressed.
But actually, that’s about it. It will definitively have its applications in almost all industries, and for sure also in hospitality, tours & activities and gambling. The most obvious ones will be vastly improved chatbots (be it on websites or whatever digital self service touchpoint), more productive (and often probably better) content creation (eg. for tour descriptions or social media posts) and translation.
What has to be seen yet, is which effect it might have on web search “behaviour” overall – the model from OpenAI is integrated in Bing (Microsoft), while Google recently launched Bard based on its own language model LaMDA and not to forget Baidus Ernie.
All this bots are part of generative AI and focus on language, while generative AI also has its merits already in creating Images and even Videos. And for sure AI overall has many more “playgrounds” where it will be – and partly already is – transformative, be it cancer detection based on images or advancements in autonomous vehicles. One thing is for sure, it is well worth to watch this space intensively and open minded and to look also right and left of “only” ChatGPT.
